What to Do If You're Locked Out

The Metropolitan Building Managers of New York (Metro BMNY) member website lands you on a page called Membership Requires Attention when your account is not in good standing. This page exists so you can fix the problem in one click — and so you do not have to hunt around the rest of the site to figure out what is wrong.

Metro BMNY Membership Requires Attention page with a Pay Dues Now button

What you see

A clean white card with a navy header. There are two versions of the message:

  • Welcome — Activate Your Membership — shown to newly approved members who have not yet paid their first year of dues
  • Membership Requires Attention — shown to existing members whose dues are past the grace period or whose account has gone dormant

In both cases the next step is the same: click Pay Dues Now.

Why this happens

There are a handful of reasons the association may route your sign-in to this page:

  • You just got approved. Your application was accepted and now the website is asking for your first dues payment.
  • Your dues lapsed. The grace period after your renewal date has ended. Most members never see this — reminder emails go out a month and a week before renewal — but if life got busy and a payment slipped, the site catches it.
  • Your account expired. Dues that remain unpaid 30 days past the grace period move the account into an expired state. Paying brings you back to current.
  • Your account was archived. The board marks accounts inactive after an extended absence. Paying alone may not be enough here — see the contact line below.

How to get back in

  1. Click the gold Pay Dues Now button.
  2. The site sends you to Square's secure checkout. Type your card number, expiration, and security code.
  3. Click Pay on the Square page.
  4. Square sends you back to the member website. Within a few seconds your account flips back to active and the regular dashboard loads.
  5. The insurance enrollment prompt and the rest of the website's features come back automatically — no extra step needed.

What you can still do while locked out

Even on the Membership Requires Attention page, a few things keep working:

  • Sign in and sign out — the lock is on features, not on access to the site itself
  • Update your profile — there is a small Update your profile link at the bottom of the card. Useful if your contact info has changed and that is part of why we could not reach you.
  • Email the office — the contact line is right on the card

Things that are paused while you are locked out:

  • Browsing the Events list and RSVPing

These continue to work even while locked out:

  • Update your profile — profile editing stays accessible
  • Documents — you can still view and upload documents
  • Insurance enrollment — the beneficiary form and insurance enrollment remain accessible

Everything else comes back the moment your dues clear.

When paying does not fix it

If you are an archived account — an extended absence the board has flagged — paying may not be enough on its own. Email admin@metropolitanbmny.com and we will help with the reinstatement.

Same email if anything else feels wrong — the amount looks off, you think you already paid, or the message keeps showing up after a successful payment. Do not guess; we will look it up in the records.

Metro BMNY has been serving NYC building managers since 1944. Lockouts are rare and easy to fix — the goal is to keep you connected to the association, not to keep you out.
